This Day in History: 1966-08-16
CAC CA-27 Sabre A94-358 operated by 81 Wing / 2OCU RAAF crashed into the densely populated Newcastle suburb of The Junction, NSW on 16 August 1966. 20-year-old Pilot Officer Warren William (‘Bill’) Goddard was flying a night training exercise from RAAF Williamtown when he got into difficulty and, despite his efforts to manoeuvre the aircraft away from populated areas, he crashed at about 1800 hours. Firemen and RAAF personnel found Goddard’s body in a Glebe Rd house which had been empty at the time of the disaster. Three people were taken to hospital, two with shock and one with a chest injury received when hit by wreckage. Sources: Aviation-Safety.net website; ADF-Serials
