On this day in Australian aviation history:

1943 Bristol Beaufighter Mk. VIc A19-77 of No. 5 OTU RAAF crashed at RAAF Forest Hill airstrip, NSW on 1 July 1943. The aircraft crashed and caught fire while attempting to land after a night cross country flight. The crew, pilot FLTLT J. Edquist and navigator FLTSGT N.J. Moyle were both killed. 1970 Melbourne International Airport at Tullamarine was officially opened for international operations by the Rt. Hon. J.G. Gorton, Prime Minister of Australia, on 1 July 1970. The first international arrival was Alitalia AZ723 from Rome and the first international departure was Qantas QF530 'City of Bendigo' to San Francisco. Source: melbourneairport.com.au
1988 The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was established under theĀ Civil Aviation Act 1988Ā as a separate body from the Department on 1 July 1988. The Department of (Civil) Aviation and its predecessors had operated from 1945, but Parliament and the Government determined that separation was now best. Source: via aph.gov.au website
1997 Aviation search and rescue responsibilities were transferred from ASA to Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) within the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) on 1 July 1997. The Aviation Legislation Amendment Bill (No. 2) 1997 was debated and covered airport security and passenger compensation issues.
