On this day in Australian aviation history:

2003 The first two Operation Slipper aircraft, Lockheed AP-3C Orions A9-659 and A9-751, arrived at Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE on 16/17 January 2003. The deployment of two AP-3Cs to the Middle East was to be the RAAF’s most enduring maritime aircraft commitment to contain the terrorist threat post the September 11 terrorist attacks. Operation Slipper flights were made over Afghanistan. Source: Aircraft of the RAAF.
