1945 Consolidated B-24J-5-NT Liberator A72-306 operated by 99 Squadron RAAF crashed at Amberley, Queensland, on 16 August 1945. The aircraft crashed during take off from Amberley Airfield at approximately 3:40pm. Unfortunately the B-24 Liberator's brakes were applied too soon before the aircraft was safely in the air. As a consequence the nose of the aircraft dipped heavily into the runway causing the nose wheel assembly to collapse and also shearing the hydraulic lines for the engine controls. The aircraft subsequently skidded off the south east end of the runway into a 60 feet deep gulley and broke in half. The aircraft was one of nine B-24 Liberators scheduled to take part in a formation flight over Brisbane during the Victory Celebrations and was carrying a crew of eight plus 11 passengers. Four personnel died in the crash: Cpl. Edith Tansley Sharpe (94089) WAAAF, Cpl. Jacqueline Ruth Row (98112) WAAAF, Flight Sergeant Arthur Henry Clausen (439868) (Nav "B"), Warrant Officer E.F. Carlson (424965) (2nd Pilot, died of his injuries two days later in Greenslopes Hospital). Sources: aviation-safety.net website; Australia @ War website

1966 CAC CA-27 Sabre A94-358 operated by 81 Wing / 2OCU RAAF crashed into the densely populated Newcastle suburb of The Junction, NSW on 16 August 1966. 20-year-old Pilot Officer Warren William ('Bill') Goddard was flying a night training exercise from RAAF Williamtown when he got into difficulty and, despite his efforts to manoeuvre the aircraft away from populated areas, he crashed at about 1800 hours. Firemen and RAAF personnel found Goddard's body in a Glebe Rd house which had been empty at the time of the disaster.
